Languages and Communication
Yuka and Bob are exchanging opinions about why they study languages.
Yuka: It’s important that we study English and other languages, but a lot of people think that we do it for college entrance exams.
Bob: Well, there’s so much more to it than that. We can gain a lot of other kinds of knowledge, too.
Yuka: Exactly! I believe languages are like a window into different cultures. We learn not only about words and grammar, but also about different countries and cultures.
Bob: You can say that again. Studying languages also shows us cultural similarities and differences.
Yuka: Right. So, it’s likely that we learn more about our own country by understanding and comparing different cultures.
Bob: I completely agree. That is a huge benefit of language learning.
